By the Numbers: Who Has the Best Chance in the East?

Looking at the clear top 3: ATL, NYCFC, Philly

For today, our metric of quality will be overall record of these teams when playing opponents in the east that are above the playoff line. A team’s record is a great way to see where they stack up overall, but in the playoffs, it does not matter who beat Cincinnati and Vancouver, it matters who can beat the teams in the Eastern bracket.

Atlanta United: ATL at this moment has played 9 matches against teams above the playoff line in the East. They have come out with a record of 4-3-2. Against NYCFC, they are 1-0. Against Philly, they are 1-1.

NYCFC: City at this moment has played 9 matches against teams above the playoff line in the East. They have come out with a record of 4-3-2. Against ATL, they are 0-1. Against Philly, they are 1-0.

Philadelphia Union: Philly at this moment has played 10 matches against teams above the playoff line in the East. They have come out with a record of 6-2-2. Against ATL, they are 1-1. Against NYCFC, they are 0-1.

Current ranking for playoff success potential:

1. Philadelphia

2. Atlanta

3. NYCFC

Atlanta takes the edge on NYCFC due to winning the only match they played. Philadelphia has the strongest performance by the metric.

Variables:

Both ATL and NYC are almost unbeatable at home. NYCFC still gets ATL at home in their final meeting of the regular season.

Philadelphia, while scoring higher on today’s metric, has lost their only meeting against NYCFC. They still do however get NYCFC at home.

We’ll check back with an update after the final matches of the season have been played!
